How to place studio monitors in a small home studio
Short answer: Start with left/right symmetry, about a 60° stereo angle, equal speaker-to-listener distances, and monitors aimed at the listening position. Then check height, desk or stand placement, and the exact monitor manual for wall and boundary guidance. Treat this as a starting layout, not a guarantee.
Use this placement sequence
- Choose the listening position first. You need one reference point before making left and right geometry consistent.
- Keep the setup symmetrical where possible. Give both monitors similar relationships to nearby walls and reflective surfaces.
- Build the stereo triangle. Use roughly equal distances and about a 60° included angle as a conventional starting point.
- Aim the acoustic axis toward the listening position. Follow the exact manual rather than assuming cabinet angle alone is enough.
- Set height and orientation from the model guidance. Do not generalize another monitor family's instructions.
- Check the desk or stand compromise. A work surface can add reflections and mechanical coupling.
- Check rear-wall guidance for the exact model. Do not copy a distance from another monitor.
- Make small changes and re-check. Placement is iterative in a real room.
Start with symmetry, not a magic room percentage
Left/right symmetry is a useful first constraint because stereo imaging depends on both sides reaching the listener under comparable conditions. It does not remove room modes or make the room acoustically perfect.
Avoid universal room-percentage and wall-distance rules. The manufacturer evidence behind this guide does not support one number for every monitor and room.
Use a 60° stereo starting geometry
Several manufacturer guides converge on the same conventional starting geometry: the listener faces the midpoint, the two speakers are at equal distance from the listener, and the included angle is about 60° — approximately 30° to either side of center.
An equilateral-style triangle is a practical way to visualize this. The exact distance is not the point; equal distance and consistent angle are.
Aim the acoustic axis toward your ears
Monitor makers commonly define an acoustic or high-frequency axis intended to face the listening position. Height and orientation can be model-specific, so use the exact manual instead of copying another cabinet's setup.
Desk placement is a compromise, not automatically wrong
A desk can add reflections and mechanical coupling. Stands or suitable isolation can help when practical, but they are not automatically mandatory for every small studio. Keep the layout symmetrical and reduce avoidable reflective clutter between the speakers and listener.
The rear wall: check your exact model
Wall distance changes boundary interaction and reflected energy, but manufacturers and models give different placement ranges, port-clearance requirements, or boundary-control guidance.
Do not use a universal wall-distance rule. Check the manual for the exact model you own or plan to use.
Small rooms need iteration
Doors, windows, furniture and practical listening distance can prevent a textbook layout. Start with the cleanest geometry the room allows, then change one variable at a time. Small shifts can change room-mode and reflection behavior, but they do not guarantee a flat response.
