48V phantom power: when you need it and how to use it safely
Short answer: Use 48V only when your microphone — or another device in the microphone chain — is designed to use it. Many XLR condenser microphones need phantom power; passive dynamic microphones usually do not. Connect first with 48V off, lower the gain, enable 48V, then raise gain gradually. How to turn phantom power on safely
- Turn the input gain down.
- Make sure 48V is off.
- Connect the microphone XLR-to-XLR to the microphone input.
- Enable 48V only if the microphone or inline device requires it.
- Let the input settle, then raise gain gradually while performing at the real recording level.
- Before disconnecting, lower gain again.
- Switch 48V off.

Which microphones need phantom power?
XLR condenser microphones
Many studio condenser microphones contain active electronics and use phantom power through the balanced XLR microphone connection. “Condenser” is still not a complete specification, so check the exact microphone's power requirement.
Passive dynamic microphones
A conventional passive moving-coil dynamic microphone does not need phantom power to create its signal. If it is quiet, check the microphone preamp gain and signal path rather than treating 48V as a volume switch.
Ribbon microphones
Ribbon is not a universal “never use phantom” category. Royer's active R-122 requires 48V, while passive and vintage ribbon setups normally do not. Faulty wiring, live patching and unusual or modified equipment deserve extra caution.
USB and 3.5 mm microphones
A USB microphone is not powered by an interface's XLR phantom switch. Many small 3.5 mm electret microphones instead use plug-in power, commonly around 3–5V, which is electrically different from studio +48V phantom power.
Does phantom power increase microphone gain?
No — not by itself. The gain control belongs to the microphone preamp and amplifies the microphone-level signal. The 48V switch supplies power to devices that require phantom power.

Combo XLR/TRS inputs: one socket, two signal paths
Many interfaces use a combo socket that accepts XLR or a 6.35 mm jack. The XLR side normally reaches the microphone preamp; the jack side is commonly for line or instrument/Hi-Z sources. If 48V is illuminated but a microphone is plugged into the jack portion, the problem may be the input path rather than phantom power.
Some interfaces switch 48V for more than one input
Phantom power can be per-input, global, or banked across multiple microphone inputs. Before enabling shared 48V, check what else is connected to the affected XLR inputs — especially ribbon, vintage, modified or otherwise unusual equipment.
Can phantom power damage a microphone?
With modern, correctly wired balanced equipment designed for the connection, phantom power is predictable. Risk increases when the assumptions break: faulty or miswired cables, patchbays, hot-plugging, vintage/modified equipment or devices not intended for the 48V XLR path.

Microphone not working: troubleshoot by symptom
No signal at all
- Confirm the microphone is on the XLR microphone input.

Should I leave 48V on all the time?
There is no benefit in treating 48V as a universal “better sound” switch. Use it when the connected device requires it, and turn it off before changing microphone connections.
Will 48V make my dynamic microphone louder?
Not by itself. A passive dynamic microphone's level is handled by preamp gain. A phantom-powered inline booster is different: 48V powers the booster and the booster adds gain.
Why does my condenser microphone still not work with 48V on?
Check the XLR microphone path, cable, selected input, gain and routing. A jack connection in a combo socket may be using a line/instrument path rather than the XLR microphone preamp.
